In the Balinese belief, time (Kala) has a deep meaning. Time is a marker of separation, change and meeting. In DenPasar2022: It\u2019s About TIME! We invite everyone to meet and explore possibilities, seek potentials, and initiate change for a better future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s\nabout TIME! to rethink how Bali\u2019s deeply embedded traditions can inform its\ncontemporary arts + design. How do we define contemporaneity? What approaches\ncan be used? How can one breaks free from the trappings of certain conformities\nthat has been remnants of yester-years to truly look at local context and\ntradition in current time? Where to begin?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s\nabout TIME! to place contemporary arts + design as an essential element in\nBali\u2019s tourist centric ecology. How to build healthy and supportive local arts\n+ design eco-system so current discourses can be made aware, talked about, got\ndiscussed and archived properly. Why is it so crucial for us to be doing this,\n\u2026NOW? Who are the stakeholders? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s about TIME! to review and rethink, this 2022, after the 2 years of hibernation we have had during the extra-ordinary 2020 – 2021 pandemic experience. Identified primary environmental concerns such as plastic waste pollution (too much of them), clean water scarcity, and their impact on environment and climate change in Bali. With countries all over the world reopening borders and deciding to live alongside COVID, and the comeback of travels and tourism, how can arts+design play an important role in current times?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since\nits debut in 2017, DenPasar Art+Design aspires to share emerging voices of\npeople based in Bali, expressing their concerns in local social, political, and\nenvironmental issues through arts and design. From\nopen-call curated Exhibitions and discussions, to Design Talks, Design Walks alongside\npublications of DenPasar Arts + Design Map, Bali Art+Design Guide, and\ndeveloping to intensive curatorial residency programming,  art critique writing workshops, art\nmanagement webinars, and the recent fully online curatorial residency program,\nDenPasar Art+Design\u2019s format has evolved from exhibition making and public\nprogramming engagements to its recent years\u2019 capacity building activities with\na focus to build a healthy creative eco-system in Bali together with its\nneighboring islands. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In\n2022, in its sixth edition, DenPasar Art+Design is coming full circle,\npresenting a wholistic program consisting of various elements that would help\nbuild a healthy arts and creative eco-system consisting of the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2-weeks intensive curatorial residency program<\/strong> , selected by open call to be hosted in Bali with hybrid format (7\u2013 21 October 2022), featuring internationally and nationally known keynote speakers, as well as experienced local mentors who are expertise in their fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Specific technical workshops & public program<\/strong>, open for public participation: critical writing workshop, arts+creative management workshop, artwork conservation workshops, art handling workshop, book launch, film screening, artist led workshops and curatorial & artist talk. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

6 weeks of DPS21 alumni curators showcase<\/strong> exhibition<\/strong>: a multidisciplinary celebration of thoughts, writings, discourses seen through past alumni of DPS (7October \u2013 18 November 2022)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SPEAKER<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

A series of intensive classes, studios visits, and community presentations will cover a wide area of topics from art curatorial definition and practices across Indonesia, Indonesia\u2019s art history and context, fine arts and contemporary arts in Indonesia, performing arts review and critics, formal and informal art education, and many others. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

DenPasar2022: It\u2019s About TIME! will be formally open by Prof. Dr. I Wayan Kun Adnyana, S.Sn., M.Sn, the Rector of Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Denpasar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mentors and speakers consist of Indonesia\u2019s leading artists, art practitioners, curators, academics, architects, anthropologists and researchers, including FX Harsono (JKT), Mitha Budhyarto (JKT), Ayos Purwoaji (SBY), Hendro Wiyanto (JKT), Alia Swastika (JOG), Alvin Tjirtowirjo (JKT), Saiful Bakhri (US), and I Ketut Dirgantara (Bali). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Studio \/ gallery visits to Pintu Saren Art Space (Bali), BIASA Artspace (Bali) and community presentations by Teater Kalangan (Bali), Djamur Komunitas (Bali), Pintu Saren Art Space (Bali), and BIASA Artspace. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>PARTICIPANT<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Aldridge Tjiptarahardja (Surabaya)<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The founder and the CEO of UNIC Space (formerly known as Unicorn Creative Space), a platform connecting young emerging artists to creative spaces to exhibit their works. The platform (soon to be digital) which is designed for communities, activities, and programs related to arts, design, and culture is actively expanding from East Java to multiple regions in Indonesia. Till this day, the tech-enabled company has been rapidly growing to activate creative movements and to support creative individuals in sustainable ways through various interdisciplinary collaborations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sekar Pradnyadari (Bali)<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sekar is a recent graduate in Art who has been actively involved in various organizations, volunteering, as well as assisting authors and curators respectively in producing writings and exhibitions. She is also currently part of Gurat Institute, an independent institution that focuses on research programs and visual culture development based in Bali, and is regularly involved in their various activities. Sekar is especially interested in following the development of Balinese art, and learning more on the practice of curating which she believes to be lacking in Bali. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hamdan Tamimi (Banyuwangi)<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A young curator from Banyuwangi, and a student in Education at the University of Jember. Driven firstly by his own identity which deeply ties to the rich historical past of his hometown, Hamdan is especially interested in exploring facets of localities that depart from strong research and archive, often investigating mainstream narratives and initiating further dialogue through artistic presentations. In his hometown, Hamdan has curated the group exhibition “UMARMOYO!” (2022), and co-founded the collective Java Communal Space with his peers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Danny Hartanto Kurniawan (Surabaya)<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Danny is a recent graduate in Visual Communications Design from Surabaya, who has been proactive in exploring the nooks and crannies of the artistic and cultural facets in his hometown. He has initiated and maintained various projects of critical and evocative qualities in his path, often questioning certain conditions in society. His projects are easily unconventional, driven by his conviction in the city\u2019s potentials, and based on steadily built relationships with the collaborators. Danny constantly seeks to refine his managerial and curatorial sensibilities through his professional journeys. He is currently in charge of Marketing Communication at Orasis Art Space, a newly refurbished gallery and host to seminal programs and activities related to the arts and culture.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Samuel David<\/strong> (Bali)<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shortly known as Sam, he is currently responsible for marketing and events at Masa Masa and Pithecanthropus, lifestyle brands based in Bali with a compound of space activated by live events. In his curation, Sam\u2019s professional background pairs with his empathetic nature and critical observations, with approaches that often disrupt yet highly humane and emotionally relatable. Though just started, Sam is already proactive in initiating various collaborations, in addition to being well-equipped in planning comprehensive projects with thoughtful programs, experiences, and exceptional attention to detail. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ida Ayu Agung Cintya Kusuma<\/strong> (Bali)<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also known as Cintya, a student from ISI Denpasar who pursues art and grew up in closely with art. Cintya has an interest in art and wants to dive deeper into the importance of artworks curation. She believes that everything that has a concept that is bestowed through works and artworks curation is an important element for the value that exist in artworks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joey Rahmat (Bali)<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also known as Joey, he is a student at ISI Denpasar majoring in fine arts. Previously, Joey studied Art and Business Management at a university in America. He has an interest in curatorial practice, making him directly involved by becoming an assistant curator at the American Center of Maine Contemporary Art (CMCA) in 2019. Having a background in the arts and social fields allows him to be able to communicate ‘artistically’ while also still wanting to learn more about curatorial practice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chunifa Luthfi Aulia (Surabaya)<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A recent graduate in Graphic Design, yet has accumulated extensive professional experiences even beyond the expertise of her study, through her involvement in various projects, internships and employment. She is currently a supporting force at UNIC Space (formerly Unicorn Creative Space) based in Surabaya, entrusted to helm various projects and engagements. Both professionally and personally, Chunifa is known to put forward a strong work ethics and highly cares for her peers, in addition to constantly being inquisitive and learning about the creative ecosystem as she takes part in shaping it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Komang Sucita (Bali)<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Komang Sucita or known as Rompies, is a student at ISI Denpasar majoring in fine arts. He is actively involved in organizational activities and is also actively involved in the Disprint Kultur community, a linocut print based community which is actively doing collective art exhibitions. Currently he is involved in a project, ANKAA, together with his friends aiming at exploring local wisdom values and developing them into contemporary art, increasing artistic literacy through research, writing, seminars, FGDs, and collaborating to promote artworks. He is interested in developing his organizational skill as well as enhancing the insight of curation. For him, curatorial practice is important to be learned by the fine arts students. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stephen Sutanto (Bali)<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A student at ISI Denpasar, Stephen is interested in learning and developing his curatorial skills. For Stephen, who sees himself having an art gallery in the future, a good narrative knowledge is needed. Apart from wanting to learn more about curation practices, he is specifically interested in contributing to the preservation of art objects which he believes to be lacking in Bali. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jessica Ivana (Bali)<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\nJessica is a student at ISI Denpasar majoring in fine arts. Currently she is actively building an independent creative media in Denpasar and working as the director of media and narrative. This creative media focuses on factual, actual, critical, informative and entertaining topics of art. The topics are brought into a more fun way so that the public can enjoy art in an inclusive manner. As she entered college as an art student, Jessica admitted that she was often involved as an exhibition organizer. Because of that, she wanted to learn more about curatorial and exhibition management in this residency program, which she couldn’t get in lectures. This program can help her to organize and carry out better exhibition management in the future. \n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Intan Saraswati (Bali)<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also known as Intan, she is a third year student at ISI Denpasar majoring in fine arts. Intan is active in several exhibitions, one of them is the Source of Life Energy exhibition which is taking place this year. Apart from focusing on studying art, together with her friends, she is currently building an independent creative media in Denpasar and Intan plays the role of social media and infographics. This creative media focuses on factual, actual, critical, informative and entertaining topics of art. The topics are brought into a more fun way so that the public can enjoy art in an inclusive manner. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Komang Yudana (Bali)<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Komang Yudana is a student at ISI Denpasar majoring in fine arts. As he focuses on studying fine art currently, has made Komang interested in studying art more deeply, moreover about curatorial practice. Simply, Komang said he wanted to be able to explain artworks properly and correctly. According to him, the practice of curation in Bali is still lacking and there are still few learning resources about curation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Curatorial Recidency Program Opening <\/strong>– Opening of DenPasar 2022: It’s About Time! intensive 13-day Curatorial Residency Program with keynote speaker, Prof. I Wayan Adnyana (Pak Kun) at Institut Senin Indonesia (ISI) Denpasar. In his speech, Prof. I Wayan Adnyana outlined the history of curation in Bali, their roles in shaping the arts and cultural landscape in the region, and the importance of generating new curators to pass the baton. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
