ADIR 2024 : CCG X IFI

ARTIST DESIGNER IN RESIDENCE (ADIR) 2024

French design meets Balinese crafts

CCG in collaboration with the Embassy of France in Indonesia and the Institut français d’Indonésie as well as CushCush Bali present the third edition of the ADIR program:

28th April– 3nd June 2024

Bali’s unique culture and artistic traditions are deeply intertwined and have fascinated countless international artists and anthropologists since the 1920s. Later on becoming one of the world’s top tourist destinations, Bali’s identity has become inseparable from its openness to the world.

The Artist Designer In Residence programme (ADIR) was conceived with the belief that creativity is nurtured and enriched by the meeting of different cultures, people of all horizons and different worldviews. The residency aims at bringing together the quality and originality of the “French touch” and Bali’s unique and rich craft traditions.

French designers will be invited to immerse themselves into Bali’s unique culture for one month while discovering the island’s natural materials and traditional techniques in a direct dialogue with Balinese artisans. Based on their experimentations and interpretations, the designers will create a collection of objects as a sensitive response to this unique experience. The collection will be produced as a collaboration between the designers and CushCush Gallery and will be presented at various design fairs and events in Indonesia and France.

The residency will be punctuated by a series of presentations, discussions and workshops to provide an opportunity for the designer to directly engage with the local creative communities and the public.

As a culmination of the residency, the designers will give a presentation about their Balinese journey and creative process in conceptualizing their collection. Following that event at CushCush Gallery, the designers will embark on a one-week roadshow that will take them to Surabaya, Yogyakarta, Bandung and Jakarta, to continue sharing their inspiring journey with creative communities and professionals.

ADIR 2024 Designer Profile

We are excited to welcome Clémence Plumelet and Geoffrey Pascal from Studio Marcel Poulain as our 2024 ADIR resident designers!

Both graduates from Design Academy Eindhoven in the Netherlands, Clémence and Geoffrey are textile and furniture designers, who founded their own design and interior studio named Marcel Poulain in 2021.

Inspired by the rich heritage of design around the world and from centuries past, they see design as a medium to create a dialogue across generations and cultures.

Unrestricted by the industry’s settings, their work is guided by experimentation. Exploring materiality and letting themselves be surprised by artisanal know-how and techniques, they strive to broaden the horizons of their creativity, aiming to create pieces that will sustain the test of time.

Working step-by-step in tandem, from the material to the object, from the furniture to the interior, they develop a comprehensive experience with a strong sense of storytelling, where the scenography enables the objects to come to life. The colorful and playful quality of their creations have earned them recognition, as they are notably featured among the 2024 French Design 100, celebrating the best and most promising French designers internationally.
