ADIR 2023 : CCG X IFI

ARTIST DESIGNER IN RESIDENCE (ADIR)

French design meets Balinese crafts

CCG in collaboration with the French Embassy and the French Institute in Indonesia as well as CushCush Bali present the second edition of the ADIR program:

28th May – 2nd July 2023

Bali’s unique culture and artistic traditions are deeply intertwined and have fascinated countless international artists and anthropologists since the 1920s. Later on becoming one of the world’s top touristic destinations, Bali’s identity has become inseparable from its openness to the world.

The Artist Designer In Residence programme (ADIR) was conceived with the belief that creativity is nurtured and enriched by the meeting of different cultures, people of all horizons and different worldviews. The residency aims at bringing together the quality and originality of the “French touch” and Bali’s unique and rich craft traditions.

French designers will be invited to immerse themselves into Bali’s unique culture for one month while discovering the island’s natural materials and traditional techniques in a direct dialogue with Balinese artisans. Based on their experimentations and interpretations, the designers will create a collection of objects as a sensitive response to this unique experience. The collection will be produced as a collaboration between the designers and CushCush Gallery and will be presented at various design fairs and events in Indonesia and France.

The residency will be punctuated by a series of presentations, discussions and workshops to provide an opportunity for the designer to directly engage with the local creative communities and the public.

As a culmination of the residency, the designers will give a presentation about their Balinese journey and creative process in conceptualizing their collection. Following that event at CushCush Gallery, the designers will embark on a one-week roadshow that will take them to Yogyakarta, Bandung and Jakarta, to continue sharing their inspiring journey with creative communities and professionals.

ADIR 2023 Designer Profile

We are delighted to welcome Pierre Charrié as our second Resident Artist Designer for our ADIR 2023 Programme,

A graduate from Fine Arts and from the École Nationale Supérieure de Création Industrielle (ENSCI- Les Ateliers), Pierre Charrié is fascinated by the sensory dimension of everyday objects and explores how materials, sounds or gestures can create new interactions and transcend the ordinary. Passionate about music, his research and experimentations with the sound quality of objects have earned him recognition, with some of his work included in the permanent collection of the National Center of Plastic Arts (CNAP).

A polyvalent designer, he works with a wide range of natural materials, including wood and ceramic, as well as more rarely used feathers or mother-of-pearl, which he marries with both innovative and ancestral techniques used by artisans he encounters.

His unique sensory approach to design and his refined creations have established him as one of the most promising young award-winning French designers.
