ABOUT

After its inaugural exhibition at Museum MACAN in Indonesia, Ghost Nets is showcased in the Island of God, Bali at CushCush Gallery.

CushCush Gallery presents “Ghost Nets: Awakening the Drifting Giants”, generously organized by the Australian Embassy in Indonesia and Australian Consulate-General Bali, in partnership with Museum MACAN. With the vision of maintaining and promoting the culture of its people, Erub Arts artist collective from Torres Strait, Australia does it in a contemporary way through art. Consisting of four different tribes within Darney Island, they draw artistic inspiration from their identity and connection to their land, sea, and family connections with a unique model of community arts practice. Today, Erub Arts creative practice continues to celebrate cross-cultural exchange and educational programs for all ages

One of the focus of their works showcases their efforts in highlighting environmental issues. Discarded fishing nets around their sea areas or ghost nets become one of the concerns for Erub marine life, and Erub Arts transformed this material into a unique collection of art. Highlighting this environmental concern since 2010, Erub Arts is now recognized for its Ghost Nets works which are showcased in various international exhibitions.

18 artworks by Erub Arts will be featured as an installation of marine animals at Ghost Nets exhibition. The exhibition ran from 22 July to 30 July 2023 at CushCush Gallery Bali. As part of the exhibition, there are also educational public programs including ‘Pulau Plastik’ screening and discussion with Kopernik, children’s workshop including story telling, collage and puppet performance with invited artists of Tell Me Tales.

PUBLIC PROGRAM
  • 27 August 2023 – Pulau Plastik Documentary Screening

The first public program take place on 27th the August 2023 . Pulau Plastik documenter invited us to realize that that impact of plastic waste is much closer than we think. The session followed by a discussion session facilitated by Andre Dananjaya, the co-producer of the documentary and Kopernik.

  • 29 August 2023 – Children Workshop

CushCush Gallery welcomed children from various villages in Bali and public to participated in creative workshops that educate about importance of marine life together with artists of Tell Me Tales children story book; Juli Sastrawan, Jong Santiasa Putra, and Irene Febry.

Jong Santiasa and friends from Kacak Kicak Puppet Theater presented an immersive performance entitled ‘Begol’ to heighten the spirit of the day. Followed by Kak Irene Febry invited the children to make their own collage arts from everyday materials. And Juli Sastrawan told his story to remind us to keep our ocean clean. Such fun activities to educate childern about the importance of marine life. Collage artist Irene Febry invited the children to explore their creativity to make their own collage arts from everyday materials. Lastly, Juli Sastrawan present story telling session that educate kids about importance of the marine life.
