ADIR 2026 – 2027 : CCG X ARCADE X IFI

Artist Designer In Residence (ADIR)

CROSS-CULTURAL AND MULTIDISCIPLINARY RESIDENCY

Initiated and organized by CushCush Gallery, in partnership with Arcade – Design à la campagne®, the Embassy of France in Indonesia and the Institut français d’Indonésie.

Launching its call for applications for the 2026-2027 Artist Designer In Residence (ADIR) program.

CONTEXT

The Artist Designer In Residence (ADIR) program has successfully run for its initial phase from 2022 to 2025 with the support of the French Embassy in Indonesia and the French Institute in France and in Indonesia. ADIR aims to reinterpret Bali’s unique traditional arts and crafts through the prism of contemporary design as a way to preserve Bali’s unique heritage and to promote the relevance of craftsmanship. Over 3 editions, the program has gained visibility, showcasing the relevance and high quality of Balinese craftsmanship on the international scene through the prism of French design. Building on this positive momentum, CCG is expanding the residency.

In this new phase, CCG is partnering with Arcade – Design à la campagne® based in Burgundy, France to establish ADIR as a cross-residency for two designers, one from France and one from Indonesia. The residency will unfold in two parts, in Bali, Indonesia (16 August – 20 September 2026) and in Burgundy, France (1 – 28 August 2027).

Founded in 1986, the ARCADE Design à la campagne® association is dedicated to promoting and supporting design and crafts. Located in the heart of a rural area, it develops a unique cultural project that combines research, exhibitions, and experimentation, directly engaging with local realities and contemporary issues.

For its 2026 – 2027 edition, ADIR is responding to Arcade’s current involvement in Tomorrow, forests, a multi-disciplinary project blending science, practices, culture and creativity to explore the future of forests in the Burgundy region.

Everywhere in the world, forests are indeed increasingly at the center of crucial issues: sustainable management of natural resources, ecological degradation, transmission of forestry-related know-how and crafts, preservation of biodiversity, the evolution of our perception about these ecosystems that sustain our lives. Recent disruptions that have been impacting Bali further fuel ADIR’s direction towards environmental concerns.

Design and art are some of the disciplines through which the project aims to explore the bond between humans and forests, especially to invent new ways to better understand, interact with and highlight the value of these vital natural spaces. In association with the project, ADIR will provide a multicultural space of experimentation for the designers and the artist to develop their own interpretations and perspectives on this complex multi-faceted theme in specific local natural and cultural environments.

  • ADIR in Bali (16 August – 20 September 2026)

While in Bali, the residents will explore this complex topic through the island’s specific cultural and natural context. They will immerse themselves for 4 weeks into Bali’s rich natural environment, unique arts, crafts traditions and culture through direct encounters with local artisans, artists and cultural practitioners. Based on their experimentations and interpretations, the residents will develop their own creative response to this unique experience in the form of a collection of objects. The collections will be produced as a collaboration between the designers and CushCush and will be presented at various design fairs and events in Indonesia and France, notably Paris Design Week.

The residency will be punctuated by a series of presentations, discussions and workshops to provide an opportunity for the residents to directly engage with the local creative communities and the public. The residency will culminate with an exhibition retracing their Balinese  journey and presenting their creative process in conceptualizing their collections.

The residents will then embark on a one-week roadshow that will take them to Yogyakarta, Bandung and Jakarta, to further share their inspiring journey with local creative communities and professionals.

  • ADIR in Burgundy (1 – 28 August 2027)*

The French and Indonesian designers will participate in a 4-week residency hosted by Arcade – Design à la Campagne at the Château de Sainte-Colombe-en-Auxois in Burgundy, France. Building up on their shared experience during their residency in Bali, they will team up to work on a common project rooted in Burgundy’s specific territorial context in close collaboration with local craftsmen, thus expanding their exploration of the cross-residency’s theme in a completely different local environment and forest-related issues.

During their residency in Burgundy, the designers will focus on developing an experimental aesthetic working with local materials sourced from Burgundy’s forest. The output of their experimentations will be exhibited as part of Arcade’s showcase during France Design Week 2027.

Upon completing the Burgundy residency, the designers will travel to Paris to participate in the launching of their ADIR collection developed together with CushCush at Paris Design Week and to share their ADIR journey with the French and international creative communities and professionals.

*Please note that dates for the Burgundy residency may be slightly postponed to align with Paris Design Week 2027 dates. The final dates will be confirmed in early 2027.
